Catharsis means an agent that will connect the protagonist with the audiences. The agent can be pity, sorrow, love, happiness etc. Pick any super-hit movie and see the characters in it. Check out their traits. They will be similar to common man. That is why they are super hit. People like movies that they can relate with.
Sympathy is one of the strongest emotion. Most of the goodwill in this world is all thanks to Sympathy. And we notice in movies that directors give birth to circumstances that make us feel sorry for the actor/actress. Poorer the actor is quicker we get attached to the actor. Its a psychological phenomena that first the greeks used and now everyone is using. It has good effects as well as negative. Many a times fake organizations loot us by showing us fake goodwill charities and all. We easily donate money out of sympathy.
So, we shall always check the truth behind Catharsis and not believe everything shown to us.
