When I was taking one of my many journalism classes last semester we learned about the Gestalt Theory of design. It was actually pretty interesting. When people are designing things, they take shapes and colors and put them together so that they look like something else.Take the panda from above as an example. It is the logo for WWF, the World Wildlife Foundation. While the image clearly looks like a panda bear, it is not technically a panda. In fact, it is a bunch of random shapes placed so they would resemble a panda. This is a perfect example of a panda bear. If the panda were complete, there would be a line across the top of the shape to finish the animal. Because there is no line, it is a bunch of well placed circles. It is a brilliant marketing campaign.
It is all about social interpretation. Some things you see and you associate it with something else. It is kind of like when you are younger and you look to the clouds to see what shapes you will see, except these shapes are on purpose.
Keep a look out on the web for more things like this, I guarantee that you will find them everywhere.
