I heard that human being is in the middle of the god and animals. I think I understand what it means. In all the readings we read in this semester, many philosophers seriously try to find out what a good life (through the questions such as what a virtue is) and how to live a good life. All of us want to live a good life and to be a good person as much as we can. There is no one who wants to be bad for no reason; we want to be good for no reason. We just somehow feel good of being a good man and want to get closer to the highest good. We feel happy when we think we are a good human being- this is a uniqueness of human characteristic, I think. This makes human to be human-like.
On the other hand, we are also not that perfect. We often break our rule of a good human being because of a small benefit to ourselves – more like animals do than the god would do. This weakness is another human characteristic which makes human as a human.
Maybe the philosophical questions that we discuss seem to have no answer. But I think the important thing is not the answer but the process of the thinking. Discussing, thinking, writing and reading seriously about the questions, for example, human beings are whether good or bad when we are born, the relationship between mind and soul, or what a highest virtue is, is the reason why we can call we are a human being.
