Aaron D. Neufeld- BLOG #17- ‘The Death of the American Dream’
My grandparents and millions of others came to this country in search of fulfilling the American dream. From countries around the world, immigrants flocked here looking for jobs and better lives. The American dream was no secret and was widely spoken about across the globe. The perfect family lifestyle of America was portrayed and shown on television and in films. Everybody wanted to be an American. Everybody wanted that perfect life.
For a long time it was this way. Everybody was focused with keeping up with the Jones’ next door. America was flooded with new, innovative, high paying jobs. This was the place for work and for life. It was good times in America. However, the prosperous times have recently become an issue. America has entered a recession and was on the verge of a depression. The unemployment rate is at an all time high. Millions are jobless and many are even homeless. All of our grandparents left their home countries and migrated here for opportunity. They left behind friends and family all in search of the dream. Now because of hard economic times, may of these immigrants children and grandchildren are returning to their home countries to work, in order to have a good job and a good income to support their own families. It is ironic and sad.
