Aaron D. Neufeld- BLOG #19- ‘The Economy and School, Part 2’
Taking the students and the professors out of the equation momentarily, let’s focus on what is going wrong. Instead of focusing on what to do with major-less students or career-less teachers, why are these budget cuts occurring? OK. The state doesn’t have enough money to fund these programs anymore. It simply can’t afford to pay all the teachers necessary to teach these programs when these programs are not as popular as those in other fields such as the fields of medicine with biology and chemistry majors, or business programs.
In 2010, the budget for the Department of Defense is $663.7 billion. The budget for the Department of Education is $46.7 billion. See the difference there? Our students across the country, from early education and elementary schools to high schools and colleges are not getting sufficient educations! Why are we spending so much money to defend our country when we can’t teach the people living in the country to defend themselves? Idiocracy, here we come!
Getting rid of these programs would displace thousands of students from SUNY schools alone and would put hundreds and hundreds of professors and teachers out of work, only increasing the unemployment numbers that our country is trying so hard to decrease! Maybe if we invested more into our education, whoever thought these budget cuts was a good idea, would have thought it through a little better.
