Aaron D. Neufeld- BLOG #20- ‘Urban vs. Suburban’

Living in Suburbia is really interesting. I live in Nassau County, in Valley Stream. It is a very suburban area. My neighborhood is filled with huge houses, white picket fences and vast wide lawns. Each house has ma, pa and 2.5 kids at least! And let’s not forget the golden retriever! Lawyers, doctors, architects and plenty more white collar workers live there, driving around in the convertible Lexus or their 2011 Nissan Maxima—fully loaded. Classic suburbia.

My neighborhood seems just like every movie suburban neighborhood. Low crime, a lot of white people, happy neighbors wave to each other while mowing the lawn, etc. Yet, what I love so much about suburbia is not all the pretty, happy stuff, but rather, the location. Just a half an hour train ride and you are dumped into Penn Station, smack in the heart of Manhattan. Urban headquarters. Life is so different there, yet so close to home.

The city is always rockin’. There is always something happening. The city is filled with millions of strange, odd, weird and awesome people of all races, religions, and backgrounds. It’s totally a groovy place. If you want food of any type, you can find it in the city. If you want to see any type of performance or art, you can find it in the city. The urban city is where it’s at, and the best part is that it’s a lot closer to home than many of us realize!
