Aaron D. Neufeld- BLOG #30- ‘Why Are You Calling Me?’

I find it very interesting how fast the technology of the world is changing. Just fifty years ago, people everywhere were excited to have color television! A telephone was a great tool, and an essential one! How else would you communicate with friends and family down the block or even in another country? A few short years later and today’s phones act as e-mail, computers, HD color televisions, and of course… a phone.

But who really uses the phone function anymore? Everything today is e-mails, instant messages, social networking, text messaging, etc. If I were to wall post, text, or instant message one of my friends, “Hey, Whatsup?” they would think nothing of it and give the usual reply, “nm,” for “not much.” Nothing is out of the ordinary here at all and so goes on the conversation. However, if I decided to call one of my friends to ask them, “Hey, Whatsup?” they would be confused and awkward about the whole situation. “Why are you calling me?” they’d ask.

Phone calls are awkward and people feel that receiving a phone call must only be for urgent or business matters and not for socializing. If you want to socialize, why hear the voice of your friends and family? Simply read their text. It’s a sad transition, but a true one. Hopefully if they aren’t using phones to speak with their friends, they’ll at least use video chats so that they can see and hear the people they care about, rather than simply reading their uniform text!
