Onibaba response 3
We discussed in class a way of viewing the set of the film through a Freudian interpretation: the tall grass represents the hidden environment of the subconscious and the hole represents female sexuality and its destructive influence on men. Its interesting that many societies have similar stories of women living in remote locations, using their sexuality to kill men, the Greeks have many examples: Sirens, Medusas, Sphinxes etc. Perhaps this reflects a deep fear in patriarchal societies that men cannot ever fully control women using physical strength, because they are weaker than women psychologically.
