So the Hollywood sign almost got removed?

I just recently found out that the Hollywood sign was about to be remove to build homes. Actually I heard it was going to be removed prior times. It's located on private property but it happens to bring a lot of tourist in to view the signs. The property was going to be bought by a home developer, but at the last second Hugh Hefner known for Playboy, threw in 1 million dollars to keep the place as it is. He says it symbolizes the dreams of millions and should be considered a historical landmark. So thank you Mr. Hefner for your donation and thinking about the history and emotional attachment many of us aspiring filmmakers, actors, etc have to this symbolic sign.
