I’m sure that I’m not really saying anything that hasn’t already been said about the funding crisis for SUNY, but just something to consider:
In the 60’s, when Stony Brook was first getting started, tuition was around 100 dollars if I remember correctly, practically free, when at that point in time, there were still many well-paying jobs that didn’t require a college degree. Now, when a degree is required for even simple jobs, there’s no room in the state budget for SUNY. What changed? I don’t know a lot about the history of the NY state budget, but it seems strange that representative were about to funnel what was presumably a larger percentage of the budget than is allocated now (although SUNY may have grown faster than NY’s population), for a program that was much less important than it is now. Just something to consider.
