Surrealism

This is a painting by the Spanish surrealist painter Remedios Varo. She isn’t very famous but I find her work to be a lot more interesting than that of Salvador Dali. Dali supposedly made his painting by holding keys as he was falling asleep, so that right as he fell asleep, he would drop them and wake up. He would then paint whatever he saw in his dreams. Supposedly he thought the imagery would give us a window into the subconscious, but after looking at his paintings for long periods of time, many of them seem like little more than pretty fantasy. Varo, on the other hand, thought out her work deliberately, usually combining themes of science, music, and philosophy, showing their interplay. I think this painting is perhaps supposed to show how ones imagination alters ones reality when they are reading a novel.

women and property

Looking at the pictures today in class I've come to realize that all anyone thinks is that women is their property and it has nothing to do with feelings. In the 15th centuries artists painted women nude away from the city to show that women are far away and that the biggest property of men are themselves. It definitely has gotten better since then but you can still see the line between men and women. Men usually have more political power but usually have their wife right by there side. For example, the president and his wife. She's always right by Obama's side but she has taken a stand and done things with her husband not there. Also sometimes when I look around in a restaurant or store and the couples introduce themselves, the man usually presents his woman as something of property.

There is a positive side to these paintings. Without them some artists wouldn't have been famous and the promiscious ladies of that time probably would be an even more controversy later in life. If we didn't have these differences we wouldn't have these famous pictures but would would we have a different perspective on life and even maybe a different style in paintings then?
