All of us know what I mean by hearing music from someone else’s headphones. It is so loud that you can easily hear and understand what the other person is hearing. The purpose of using headphones is to listen to music or whatever while others are not disturbed or so that others cannot hear what you are listening to. Lots of people including me, sometimes, turn up the volume to the point that someone next to me can hear what I am listening to. Usually, that is not a problem to others if your headphones are too loud because people get into that type of situation in the elevator, or when walking, or in the bus or something. People usually don’t come to class and sit in the chair as their headphones are on max volume but once in a while it does become a bit of an issue.
I personally don’t care and it does not bother me or most other people when someone nearby is blasting their headphones and the people nearby hear what that person is hearing. Nobody really cares because they only hear it for a brief amount of time as they are in an elevator or walking past each other. But, sometimes you sit next to someone who is blasting their headphones and you have to hear it for like an hour or something because you have to travel a long distance. Even then, it’s not that big of an issue unless you are trying to read a book or doing homework and you can’t pay attention because of the background noise from the person’s headphones.
What is the real problem with other people being able to hear what someone is listening to because the volume is so high is that loud noise gradually damages your ears and decreases your ability to hear. You become less sensitive to “normal” noise. For example, someone who blasts their headphones or blasts their speakers at some point begin to lose their sensitivity to hearing things. For such people to be able to hear something, the noise or someone speaking to them would have to do be louder otherwise he/she will not hear or understand what someone else is trying to communicate. So in other words, listening to things too loudly is much more of a problem for yourself than to other people nearby. As long as you don’t blast speakers in a public setting, people are not bothered or distracted. When you blast your headphones while walking or traveling by bus or train, it is usually tolerable and people just ignore the noise but in the process you damage your ability to hear.
I don’t think that people need to listen to music or whatever as loudly as they do. It is so loud that other people a few feet away can hear your stuff and that just defeats the purpose of using headphones. I unintentionally turn up the volume too much once in a while when I listen to music but that’s rare and I usually don’t have any difficulty hearing music with my headphones with minimum volume.
Some people just like to blast their headphones even if they can easily hear their music on lower volume.
