I think that we have a thought and belief those are incompatible.
I brought up the topic about the relationship between body and mind in the conversation (whether mind can be separated from the body or not, whether a soul exists or not), with my Korean friends. Everyone had some kind of thought and belief about the issue. We talked about souls, afterworld, science and brains.
The result was very interesting. Most of us agreed on we have incompatible thought and belief at once. It means that we admit that the thinking process and personality is something happens in the brain physically and chemically and can be explained by science – so if there is no brain, there is nothing. But we also have a belief that the dead people do not just disappear or gone as if they ever existed, but we believe they would watch us all the time and help us from somewhere. And there exists mysterious and spiritual things that cannot be explained by scientific theories or experiments.
For short, although we know that mind is something controlled by the brain, we still want to believe that mind is not just mortal and can be separated from the body. It sounds very strange but we do.
