Hamlet response

Rereading Hamlet after having read various French existential novels, the story almost seems like the inspiration for some of them. I’m not an expert on early fiction, but Hamlet seems like one of the first dramas without a real hero, direction to the story, or moral message. Hamlet is just a confused teenager, being told what to do by his parents and not really knowing why he should listen to them, almost like Holden Caufield from Catcher in the Rye. I think that this part of the reason that Hamlet is Shakespeare’s most popular play. Hamlet doesn’t seem like an ancient hero: he is a modern man with modern problems.
