Hell Houses

Continuing on the theme of manipulative theater, hell houses are an interesting example. Usually set up by evangelical christian churches, they are a twist on the traditional halloween haunted house production: instead of ghosts and monsters, they show actors having abortions, taking drugs, having homosexual relationships etc. and then showing the "horrifying" consequences of these actions. Despite disagreeing with their positions on social issues, I think the real problem with these productions is that they appeal to emotions rather than logic to prove the churches teachings. If these things are really as bad as they make them out to be, the statics should speak for themselves. Of course, they aren't doing anything that politicians haven't been doing for thousands of years. Presidential debates are really just another sort of hell house: candidates consistantly stretch facts about their opponents knowing that fear will win them votes.
