RUR and terminator

Ever since the old Golem legend, there have been an endless number of stories about humans creating a new life form and then having it turn against them. I think this really stems from the religious belief that only God should be allowed to create life, perhaps because humans aren't morally pure enough to do it properly, rather than a serious fear of technology taking over. Realistically, robots that we design should never do anything unexpected. Even if we give them abilities to make complex decisions and form opinions, they still are ultimately following whatever "desires" and goals we program into them. If we create a race of robot slaves, why would they see freedom as something that is desirable, unless we programmed them to see it as being desirable? I think a much more well founded fear is that robots will kill us off, not because they want to take over the world, but because warring presidents and generals tell them to kill us off.
