Ice Cube and the CIA

Ice Cube, a gangster rapper from South Central Los Angeles has plenty to say on the crack issue. In John Singleton’s debut phenomenon Boyz N The Hood (1991), Ice Cube plays a politically conscious member of the Crips named Doughboy. Ultimately coming to terms with his actions, Doughboy gives up drinking and decides to live an honest life. An epilogue states that Doughboy is murdered by a rival gang shortly afterwards.
As politically conscious in real life, Ice Cube targets the CIA in his controversial 2008 single Gangsta rap made me do it. The song attacks government officials who blame rap for crime. Ice Cube argues not only that violent crime existed long before rap, but that these bureaucrats are hypocrites, as the government is guilty of violating human rights. He accuses the CIA, “Fuck you old mother fuckers tryin’ to change rap…But ain’t you the same cat who sat back when they brought cocaine back?” Cube makes a good case that African Americans are not at fault, and that it is the government to blame.
