The Last Final
Tomorrow is my final, Japanese, and I'm trying to study for it while writing these last blog posts. The annoying part for this exam is just memorizing all the kanji and words for the honorific speech. For example, there are three ways you can say "to come" depending on who you talk to: your superior, your friend, etc, AND then it also depends on whether it INVOLVES that person. For example, when talking to your superior about an action that involves yourself, you'd use "Type II" honorific speech, and if it involves your superior, you'd use "Type I". If I wanted to say "Sorry but I had to go home" to my superior, I would say ごめんなさい、でも、家に参らないといけませんでした, but if it involved my superior, I'd have to change 参る to the 伺う and it can quickly become really complicated. There was a report saying that new Japanese colleague graduates cannot even use honorific speech well and they have to relearn it, since they cannot get jobs when speaking to an interviewer or even writing their resume! So, it's not just me ^^
