During class, Professor Baldwin had us all watch a movie called "House of Games".
According to imdb.com, "House of Games" is about a psychiatrist who comes to the aid of an impulsive gambler, but finds herself getting pulled into a game. A game that seems to be about studying a con man, but ends up being all about her.
She meets this con man who swirls her around in circles, seeming to be showing her reality of the con man. He even tells her straight up that he is a con man and that is all she will find in him. But she is enticed even more because of this fact. Soon, he has her following him around, getting her into different situations where she seems to be getting closer with him.
Then he pulls the "I need to get away from you to protect you" stunt. Oh, how she was fooled.
But is it the con man's fault or the psychiatrist's fault that she was fooled?
Professor Baldwin asked us, "Who is the real con man here?"
For the people who only see the obvious would say the con man is the con man.
But if you look at it in a different way, the psychiatrist is the con man in the movie.
She claims to be a psychiatrist that can solve other people's problems but cannot meet the demands of her patients.
On the other hand, the con man tells her straight up that he is a con man, and what he does is conning people. What he said and what he did matched with each other, while her words and actions were on completely different levels.
In the end, the "bad guy" is the psychiatrist, promising her clients something that she will never be able to deliver.
