Do We Need Others?

In class we talked about whether we are dependent on others in order to live in this world. If we talk science, no human can survive without another because we would not be able to reproduce. This applies to survival. People who try to survive by themselves, when others are in the same predicament as them, would do wisely to team up as their chances of survival would usually be increased. On a practical level one person completely cut off from everybody would not be able to grow enough food to stay alive. In modern society it is possible to lock your door and keep the world out, but even then you are relying on others. Who made the door you locked? Who grew the food you eat? You need others, period. On a psychological level the human is a social animal. It needs to interact with others of its own kind to remain emotionally healthy. Isolation is torture if it continues for any real length of time unless you are a real loner. We do need others to survive.
