Aaron D. Neufeld- BLOG #37- ‘Different Senses’

Some of the technology we play around with in class is pretty exciting. It is very interesting that we can use different senses to do things we never thought possible. I would never think of playing music with my hands without an instrument, but apparently due to webcams tracking our movement, now we can! Making music without instruments. Creating colors with motion. Etc. It is truly astonishing.

With certain programming within the MAX files we learned about in class, by simply moving, we can create colors and sounds. Our actions can actually create. Moving closer to the screen on one of the files, creates deep low tones and backing away from the screen, the sounds begin to take a higher pitch and tone until it is almost screeching when you are far enough away.

Obviously these MAX files are just the early stages in this technology and in no doubt less than ten years, this will be commonplace. I can see new genres of music and an entirely new music interface (that Apple will no doubt become king of) in which people create and listen to music, perhaps even with others across the globe through a new interface. Possibilities are endless but I have a strong feeling there is tremendous potential with these types of programs. I can even envision a new Indy band arising from nowhere in which the band players create good music entirely through dancing, jumping, waving, etc. and without using any instruments. Imagine going to a concert in which the band members can call you up on stage and allow you to put your own musical twist on one of their songs simply by dancing with them!
