"Like the Chinese symbolism [talking movies] will mean different things according to its scenic connotation. Listen to a description of some unfamiliar object-an African wart hog, for example. Then look at a picture of the animal and see how surprised you are" (Direct quote from Chaplin in TIME magazine)
This explanation is one of Chaplin’s most memorable quotes. A reporter once approached Chaplin and asked him if he would even be able to make a talking film, to which Chaplin responded, "All I need to make a comedy is a park, a policeman, and a pretty girl"
One of Chaplin's most famous silent characters, The Tramp was introduced in 1915 in a silent short of the same name. In 1921 he made his first silent film featuring The Tramp, The Kid. This film was a milestone in silent film history, and one of the most inspiring films of all time. In 1925, two years before the first talking film was introduced, he made The Gold Rush, which also featured the silent Tramp.
