Aaron D. Neufeld- BLOG #4- ‘Family History’

Aaron D. Neufeld- BLOG #4- ‘Family History’

I was trying to find photographs of my family from long before I was born but I had a lot of trouble with what sounds like an easy task. I enjoyed viewing the various photos that Professor Baldwin showed us in class of his own family, and also some fellow students bringing in photos of their parents as children and their grandparents as children. But then I thought about my family’s history and realized we really don’t have much to show for it in photos.

I am Jewish and all four of my grandparents went through the Holocaust. They were all Hungarians and one of my grandmothers even spent time in Auschwitz. After the war, all four of my grandparents left the country and after some time, ended up in the United States. But they left their home countries with nothing. They had no possessions. No photographs at all. And they no longer had their families to take photographs with. They had to start their lives over new here in the US. Once they were married, and gave birth to my parents, only some time later were they able to afford to buy a camera again. Because of this, I barely have many photos of even my parents as young children! It’s truly astonishing how many photos I have with my parents, but how my parents and grandparents hardly have any at all.
