Aaron D. Neufeld- BLOG #7- ‘News Today is not News’

Years ago, news was news. What does this mean? Well, when something major happened that was worth reporting, it made the news. It would be told by word of mouth, written up in the papers, announced on the radio and spoken about on the nightly news on television. What made the news were stories about politics, fires, death, etc. Everyone would be filled in on the news by one of the news outlets and it could and would be discussed later on.

However, today’s news is certainly not the news of yesterday and may not be considered news at all. Neither the content nor the delivery of news today resembles the news of yesterday. Take the nightly news as an example: Yesterday, a news anchor sat at a desk, delivering stories that the public should be aware of. Health epidemics, city fires, etc. all made the news. Today’s nightly news is flashy, fast and fancy. News anchors still sit at their desk but extravagant effects scroll, dissolve, and fly across the screen to draw attention. Let’s not forget about the showy sound effects that come along with the visual effects. FOX 5 News has neat attractive gimmicks such as “Operation Gotcha!”, “You Paid for It”, and “Shame! Shame! Shame!” All of these segments are more of mini series within the news to draw attention filled with sound and visual effects attached to pre-recorded segments.

Not only is the outlet of the news different, but so is the content of the news. Sure, fires, murder and disease are still discussed but more and more do celebrities make the news. Lindsay Lohan going to jail, George Clooney has a new film, or an exclusive interview with an actor, just to draw attention to the network. This isn’t real news, but it is today’s news. Today’s news is media.
