In his book Totem and Taboo, Freud comes up with the idea of Oedipus Complex, which is from this play. Freud demonstrates that, a boy's early sexual affection is his mother, and he will usually intended to strip of the position or status of his father and fighter for mother's love. However, the story of Oedipus is actually inconformity with the theory.
First, Oedipus was abandoned when he was born. He didn't have a change to build any emotional connection with his mother, let alone to take over his father's position for mother's love -- in essence, Oedipus complex. Besides, the oracle IS A 100% GUARANTEED PREDICTION, IT IS REALITY, but not because of his natural character or psychological factor. In the play, what most important is the relationship between human being and oracle. Oedipus is not deliberately to kill his father and marry his mother, and he knows nothing about who they really are.
He is actually want to avoid the tragedy according to feudal ethics as his father, so he chooses to escape. But in a strange combination of circumstances, he kills his natural father in order to defend himself. Then, he marrys his mother because he observes the reward. That is to say, everything happens in the "ignorance" condition. The suffering of Thebes uncovers the story, and he punishes himself by blind his eyes. It seems serious, and makes people bear him in mind.
Anyway, Oedipus' story is still the most outstanding one and really impressive, because the thought of "kill father and marry mother" is far away from what a normal person does, but it indeed happened and even happened in a hero's life. So I think that is why Freud explains the deep, primordial thought in Oedipus' name.
