milo/ technology

yesterday in class we watched a video about the milo project and how such technology could replace pink collar jobs. I think there are both pros and cons to the system, however personally I would not want such technology to be an integral part of my life. Yes, the technology would offer faster and more efficient "secretaries" or a machine could easily take your order for coffee, but then you miss the essential human interaction that makes going to a particular coffee shop or doctors office that keeps you coming back and makes you feel like you matter. Human interaction is what keeps people feeling comfortable, whether it's sharing a joke or someone listening to your rant about the commute over. When you start replacing people with machines it makes the experience much more depersonalized and less meaningful. The idea of leaving my future child with something like the new xbox kinect was just awful, I could never trust any child to a camera or robot. What if there was an emergency? how could the child be fed? Not to mention that a child growing up listening to robots and missing human connection would have a whole host of social issues. Technology has it's place, but I believe people although they may not be as fast or efficient are what make people have positive experiences in the service industries they require.

Black Friday

Yes it is the time of the year when shoppers go crazy buying things at a cheap price as tomorrow is offically Black Friday. People camp outside stores in the freezing cold to be the first one to go inside and take advantage of the huge savings on merchantises. It is so crazy that a person actually died by being trampled when the stores opened. People can get a whole bunch of deals such as a 200 dollar laptop and many other items on sales. Sadly I cannot wait online as I am on crutches and I am too lazy to walk around in my crutches and waiting online with thousands of crazy shoppers going around. Instead I might look around online for deals and just shop online as there is as much sales as there are when you actually go to stores. Good luck to all shoppers, hope you guys get what you want.

Robotic Society or Not?

The play R.U.R. discussed a society that was overrun by robots. One where humans were destroyed, and robots came to rule the world. After reading it, many of us may have been surprised, and let out a grateful breath, thankful for the fact that it was only fiction and not reality. But isn't it? Are we not ruled by machines today? Everything that we use each day is a machine, and our world would not be able to function with out them today. Our world literally functions due to these machines and they are what make each day pass peacefully. We must ask ourselves 'Would we be able to survive without them or would our society slowly begin to dwindle if these machines were not available?' It's a scary thought knowing that half of the acts we carry out each day aren't done completely on our own, but with the help of some form of technology. In the past, humans were extremely self sufficient, and with each passing day we are getting further and further from this being true. I hope that we can once again learn these skills which allowed our ancestors to survive, so that we too will be able to survive in case of any possible emergency.
