I discovered that I know a good amount of random people around that are taking the beginning Japanese courses. While I advanced much farther since then, I'm surprised at the amount of people that are taking it and are interested in it. However, I've always believed that to really grasp the language, you need to actually go to the country and be there for a while. Because I'm not necessarily in Japan, the second best thing would be to get a penpal. Over the summer, I got a lot from Skype and tried to communicate with them only in Japanese. I discovered that while I can type fine, my speaking skills lack because I get extremely nervous and start forgetting everything. I usually make conversations off the top of my head and I do absolutely fine with them, but place me in front of a person and it's a different story. Typing is easier since I can always make revisions and I don't have to write out the whole characters, although I know this isn't necessarily good for handwritten Japanese. The following that I pasted it is an example of one of the people I talk to (a Japanese woman in Kyuushuu), and I wish that I was able to speak non-nervously as well as I could chat >_<:
