I have enjoyed Onibaba very much and find the metaphors extremely creative and find them key to the film itself. I wanted to use the blog to express my confusion on one metaphor of the play.
Prof. Baldwin was explaining to us that the reason the mask stuck to the soldiers face as well as the face of the face of the older women’s face was because the pain of war scars you and cannot be forgotten and can never leave a person. The concept I had trouble understanding was why the mask stuck to the women, she wasn’t out at battle and she did not take part in any fighting whatsoever. Why did it stick to her face?
I have one idea, but then again it probably is not correct by any means. I think that the mask stuck to her because she was harassing the younger women. I also think that the mask stuck to her because she came in contact with someone who fought in the war, and his pain and horrific experience stuck to her and no she has to deal with his pain. It is almost as if it is a virus, infecting anybody it touches.
