Onibaba

This movie was pretty interesting. There were so many metaphors. Of course some big ones like the hole and the grass are a little more obvious, but I think there are other things that were a little more subtle. The armor was very valuable but didn't really protect much. In a way the armor could represent masculinity. The women strip these men of armor and trade it to the old man for food, which would undoubtedly imply that the armor has value. Masculinity is something that society values a lot but it can only serve as so much protection. Men's masculinity can only protect them against the concrete dangers in life but not the abstract ones such as poverty, depression, and even their own insecurities. Men can use their masculinity to shield them from others and appear tough, but what could that masculinity possibly do when they battle their own inner demons?
