Sex for Survival

Isn’t it weird, we use our sex for survival? One could argue that this statement is false but it is clearly seen throughout many of the plays we read in class. Specifically, it is seen in Oedipus, Hamlet and in my personal opinion, Onibaba.
The first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Oedipus is Oedipus marrying his mother and killing his father. If you look a little deeper than that, you can see that Jocaste uses her sex. She used to keep her title as queen; but, without knowing it she married her son.

It is more easily seen in Hamlet regarding Gertrude. So let’s take a closer look then what we merely see on the surface of Hamlet. Once again, as a whole we think that this play is simply about Hamlet avenging his father’s death with everyone ending up dead at the end. The truth is that there is more to it. For instance, Gertrude wants to stay Queen so she uses her sex to move on to her husband’s brother. In addition, it is also up for debate whether or not she was involved in the Kings killing, but one thing is certain, her sex keeps her Queen.
