In many of the Shakespeare plays there is a weird sex story going on. What im wondering to myself is why these stories are included. Then i realized it, its because the weirder and more grotesque the story, the more interested the common viewer gets.
In Hamlet, the main character Hamlet knowingly kisses his own mother which i think is really disturbing. However, Shakespeare added that part of the story for a reason. It could have been to show the madness going through his mind.
In Oedips Rex however, the King ends up marrying and sleeping with his own mother. The difference here is that the king does not know that this is his mother until the story unfolds. After realizing what he has done he ends up killing himself.
Side Note:
Oedipus Rex kills his own father such as the prophesy holds, while Hamlet is trying to find out and kill the murderer of his own father.
