This week I've been cramming for a test this Monday on Sociology. Yes, it does seem like a long time away, but I had to read and write notes for over 200 pages. During class we were talking about a front stage, back stage approach to life. This is a theory in Sociology from Erving Goffman, born in Canada who was a writer and sociologist. He gave a huge contribution to Symbolic Interaction a micro approach to society. He uses theater as a metaphor for social life in which we perform back stage behavior. It expresses impression management.
Every individual does this act in their everyday lives. When we put on an act, (the front stage,) we put on a face that people think is real in reality really isn't. When we talk to our teachers, it usually isn't how we act around our closest friends. We talk in a more polite tone and don't fool around as much.
Once we are finished with our "play" we go to the backstage, hang out and go about our daily lives the way that we would want to. I think it was really cool how sociology and my Intro to Design and Tech could appertain to eachother. This just shows that everything relates to one another.
