With the overwhelming amount of immigrants rushing into a new country, people need to preserve from their heritages, but more important, they should assimilate into the new enviornment and culture. Just like a little tree, for instance, it has been living in a certain place since it was a delicate tree seed and if you replant it into a grass, what will happen to it? Will it become grass? Of course not because of its own root—“ old culture”. Will it die if it cannot adapt to the new land? Of course. Thus, the only way to continue its precious life must be assimilating into the “new country” as soon as possible.
Any kind of culture has been developed over centries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. From personal level, I think, the immigrants shouldn’t refuse their old culture completely and the point is that they must be affected by their old culture natually at some degrees. Moreover, as an old quotation said, the greatest benefit that comes of understanding another culture is a better and deeper understanding of one’s own. For example, ten years ago the CEO of Chinese corporations usually tent to use managenental methods from west and thought that it was advanced and developed. However, nowadays most of them are willing to believe what Sun Zi Bing Fa says, which was published by an ancient Chinese person. Chinese people learn Sun Zi Bing Fa when they are young but they never believe it is better than the concept from west until they understand them both. The information above tells us that learning new culture lets them view the same thing from several aspects and compare it with their own culture.
As for what to assimilate, there are many things occuring into my mind as follows. Let me suppose I am an immigrant arrving in America and cite myself as an example. Firstly, in America, I speak English, not Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese or any other languages in order that I can make a basic living here. Secondly, although more and more restanrants are catering to the area’s large immigrant populations I still prefer the foods from my hometown. Thus, I have to get with the American-style foods here and become adapting to eat more meat and less vegetables. Thirdly, in order to avoid frustrating and damaging failures of communication I need to learn the new culture and even do the same thing as they native people. For instance, I celebrated Spring Festival in China but now it isn’t calebrated by everyone in America. Therefore I can no longer say “ Happy Spring Festival” in public and it has to be “ Happy Chritmas” here. Fourthly, there are so many differences in traffic rules between China and America so that I have to obey the new rules unless I love the tickets from police men.
To sum up, it is necessary for the immigrants to reserve their own culture because this is what their ancestors remain. On the other hand, more important and realistic, in order to live a new life they should be used to adapting to the new country and new culture as soon as possible. Actually, when the immigrants arrive in a new enviornment , the environment cannot chang according to them. The climate still remains its own rules to recycle years by years. The native people still have their own work to do and they will pause because of some new comers. Therefore the only way to make a living there is to assimilate, assimilate and assimilate according to the new country!
