Metaphor of the setting in Onibaba

During class, we watched the film titled Onibaba. Although we are not completely finished with the film, it is quite evident from class discussions and through the film itself that the grassy land that the two women are on is much more that just grass.

Through the discussions in class, it is now evident that the grassy land is in reality a vagina. As Prof. Baldwin stated, the tall grass represents the pubic hair and the hole in the center represents the vagina. At first, it was a bit esoteric, but I know realize that this is completely true. It is a binary as well.

For instance, a vagina is something that gives birth to a beautiful child; it is also something that creates and generates life. Now, in the film, the vagina is something that is actually taking lives away and destroying the very thing vaginas do. For instance, the women throw the men down the hole which in truth is destroying their lives.

On a side note, I also feel like the women are taking on a more patriarchal role, they seem to be doing things that men usually do. In my opinion it is something that had to have happened in order for the women to continue their success of selling the armor on the grassland. Then again, that is only my opinion.
