Poker Face

The term "pokerface" has come to be defined as the face used to hide emotion during poker or any other game involving cards. However, do we really only use our pokerfaces during an intense game of poker, or are we guilty of constantly putting on the poker face. We go through life, trying to hide our emotions, hoping that others won't see the truth of the situation at hand. We are so obsessed with conceiving these notions, that by the age of 9 our poker face has been perfected and we know how to constantly get away with concealing the truth.
In the plays by Roswetha we see three sisters who are jailed and threatened with death simply because of the faith they have adopted. Although they appear to be courageous, we know that in reality they must possess some sort of fear. The sisters have successfully managed to put masks on over their faces in order to hide the anxiety that they must be feeling. Their pokerfaces that they held onto allowed them to die as martyrs of their faith.
Though today most of us wouldn't do something as drastic, we still tend to cling to the ever valuable pokerface. Whether it be to hide or emotions, or to get away with a little white lie, we are constantly using these various masks in order to get through each day peacefully. The definition of "pokerface" has evolved tremendously over the years and can be defined today as as "a face used to hide ones emotion in the ever present game of life".
