columbus day

As I woke up on the second monday of october I looked at my cell phone and fell back asleep. I was sick, and at home in the city and 100 percent sure that we didnt have school. My parents stayed home from work and made me breakfast and I lesurely made my way back to stonybrook in the evening to realize that oh hey, I did have class, on a national holiday. The Stonybrook institution gives holidays for every single jewish holiday, but not on a national holiday? What gives. Which brings me to my outrage, honestly I dont see anything wrong with giving holidays to people of jewish faith, but what about all the other students? As a school that prides itself on being multi racial and diverse, what about the students that wish to go home to spend chinese and lunar new year with their families? Or russian and greek orthadox easter? or even eid and muslium holidays. Stonybrook is actually breaking the law when they are holding classes on national holidays such as Columbus day. According to government websites, there are 10 holidays that nationally are illegal for public institutions to force employers (as well as students) to go to work.
