Onibaba had a few nude scenes. Early American cinema would never do this. I remember my parents telling me that they could not even show a married couple laying in the same bed in television and movies. Knowing this and then seeing exposed breasts in a movie from the 1960s raises the question; Was this a common thing in Japanese cinema at that time?
Current movies offer topless scenes all the time now. Our culture relaxed on the rules of what is acceptable on the big screen over the years. But if some of the rated R movies of today were released back in the 60s, it would be looked at as pornography. This is why I was very surprised when I saw the multiple topless scenes in Onibaba
