Earlier in the semester we discussed the Freudian belief of the pleasure principle vs. the reality principle. At first I was quite skeptical of the belief; but as class and my life progressed, I began to think otherwise. Although I now know that this belief if valid, it is funny how it is seen through very day life.
It all started when my car simply broke. Yes, you heard correct, it broke. Anyway, I found out that I needed to get a new car and my father took on the role of the reality principle. He began to tell me that I should have saved my money previously because you should always expect the unexpected. In addition, he also began to tell me how life isn’t fair and always throws curveballs at you when you least expect it.
On the other hand, my other took on the role of the pleasure principle, and began to tell me that everything was going to be fine. She also began to say that it won’t be that much money for a new car. Of course I listened to her, but I knew deep down that getting a new car was going to leave a big hole in my wallet.
It seems as that the information we learn in class do actually apply to the real world. And when they do show up, it’s pretty interesting when things come full circle.
