The Lovely Bones

Today I watched the movie The Lovely Bones with a couple of friends. It was a really emotional movie (not to the point that I cried unlike one of my suitemates). But its about a 14 year old girl who gets raped and killed by one of her neighbors. After she dies she goes into her version of heaven and watches her family. She sees her father try to find out who killed her and the man who killed her continue life.

This reminds me of so many cases like this where children are kidnapped and killed and their families never know what happened to them. They spend the rest of their lives grieving over never having been able to give their loved ones a proper burial.

Real parents are people like the girls father in the movie. He continued to look for his daughters murderer years after she died. People would tell him that he had to give up and finally let his daughter go once and for all, but he refused to do this.

I think that there are other people that cant be considered good parents. A perfect example is in Oedipus. In the story, his real parents wanted to have him killed just to prevent a prophesy from coming true. These arent real parents because real parents would do anything to prevent harm from coming to their children. If it came down to a decision whether to save my husband or my child I would choose my child a thousand times over because thats what a good parent would do.
