Onibaba and Aristotle's Poetics
Aristotle's poetics sort of relates to Onibaba in a way. In the movie the mother puts on the mask to scare the daughter in law and show her a lesson. She wanted her to feel bad for just dismissing her son from her life like that and then sleeping with the husband's friend. In this process the mother realizes the mask wont come off and is stuck to her face. In realizing what has happened to her she makes herself a textbook definition for anagnorisis because she recognizes what is happening to her. This whole scenario is also a classic example of peripeteia. The roles are switched and there exists a reversal. Now the mother is the one that is scared, the one that feels bad for doingt this and the one that eventually learns her lesson and is destined to live with her scarred face.
