rant.

So i just drove down to 711 to get myself some coffee so I could actually be awake to read the 20+ hours of material i have to read for my classes next week, and I really am starting to wonder, what the hell is wrong with people today? Lets just picture me, glasses, sweatpants, and my boyfriends T-shirt, blearily walking into 711. Both on my way in and out, i get catcalled with some nice phrases such as "Hey shawty" "Hey baby what's up" and the ever present whistling. I don't live in a bad neighborhood, you can find me on the cusp of Nesconset and Lake Grove which is actually a nice place to live. Where do these people get off? Maybe I'm just dramatic but I find such behavior SO REPULSIVE. Does it look like in my just-rolled-out-of bed-outfit I was looking for attention? Obviously not. Not to sound like "oh I'm so good looking" (believe me my ego is nowhere near such a level) I've been noticing this kind of behavior more and more, not just to me but girls in general. I can understand if I went sashaying past in a tight revealing dress with an attention-grabbing pair of heels on, but believe me my jeans or leggings and a nice sweater aren't inspiring any erotic art anytime soon. Why do these boys (I refuse to call them men) think that it's okay or even desirable when they act like that? Who the hell is teaching them that this kind of behavior is cool? I feel like people today are just so much less respectful because in the time of the digital age, it is so much easier to become distant and dehumanize other people. I know these incidents occurred face-to-face, but I really think technology has made it easier to distance ourselves from the human interaction that would keep everyone more respectful and responsible members of a community. When you can bully someone through a text message, why wouldn't it spill over into your other interactions? Luckily my friend was with me and he's a big 6'4 200 + pound kid (to protect my 5'1 self) so I didn't feel all that threatened, just disgusted. I really wish there was just some way to hit these people over the head and tell them to shut the hell up and get over themselves, no one is enjoying your antics and that they just look ignorant (without any repercussions for myself). I can't believe I had to deal with such obnoxious people so close to home and so early in the morning.I'm sure this is going to be a great start to the day.
