Aaron D. Neufeld- BLOG #1- ‘Photos’
When looking through the various old photographs of my family long before my time, I take long looks at their faces and I try to imagine what life was like before and after the photograph was taken. One photograph is simply an image. And an image is never a reality. But sometimes an image can give us a strong sense about what reality was. I don’t really know if I am making much sense but it sounds right to me. My family can be seen in many photos. Some photos were staged by family and friends who ordered us to say “cheese” while other photos capture my family in the moment of whatever they were doing.
It can be really breathtaking to look back and reflect on all of these photos. To think of the people in them and how much they knew then, and how little they knew then. They had no idea what life had in store for them. And similarly, just as they could be so unaware of the future, me looking at the photos now is so awesome because I have no clue what it was like to be living then, in the past. Photos are marvelous in this aspect. So much is hidden behind one photograph. The people, the faces, whether it was staged or spur of the moment, the location, the times, and so much more are all essential pieces that make up a single photograph.
It’s been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. But if you think about it, a single picture is worth so much more than that. Not a thousand words, not ten thousand words and not one hundred thousand words. A picture is just a glimpse back in time. And looking back is priceless.
