Batman and Oedipus

Yesterday was very interesting and informative. Professeur Baldwin discussed the term Binarisms and how important it is to be aware of them, especially the ones that lie in between(i.e. Beach, Deviants, Hyenas, etc.). It is said binarisms is what helps make our decisions. You see, they are everywhere, especially in films, which leads me to this blog discussing the binarism of Batman and The League of Shadows, Oedipus and Oracle (or Oracle and Oedipus, whichever makes more sense) with city at plague in between.

Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, feels responsible for the demise of his parents because he was too young to defend them. Like Oedipus, he is forced to escape his home, work, and go solo. He soon returns to find a city at plague and decides to become a symbol of justice in creating Batman. This is reminiscent of Oedipus and how he solved the riddle of the sphinx and was then glorified and admired.

The League of Shadows reminds me of the oracle because they act as saviours of the city in trying to destroy it, they also see Batman an impeder to their mission.

At the end of movie, Batman defeats the League of Shadows and becomes infamous as a vigilante realizing that his presence is needed. Oedipus at the end finally sees without sight how blind he was in life, which to his defense is not entirely his fault. He accepts his fate and is cursed to walk the world alone, just the way he started.
