City of Plague
There are many things in Oedipus that can be related to things that happen in real life. One of these is that fact that when something goes wrong, people will always turn to one person who they believe is "in charge" and its their job to fix whatever has gone wrong. In Oedipus, the city was suffering from plague. People were dying, they had a scarcity of food and everyone was afraid of what the future held. So naturally they all went to Oedipus the King and told him to do something about it. The problem is that even though he tells them that he will try to help his people out; what can he really do? One man doesnt have the power to stop an entire plague from killing his people. But of course everyone will turn to one person and expect them to do something about because if something goes wrong or it doesnt get fixed then they will have someone to blame. We see this type of thing everyday. Worldwide, there are issues plaguing people and they expect others to do something about it. In many situations it is the peoples own fault that things are the way they are, but they refuse to see that. Around the world, there are problems with so many things from drugs and mass killings to issues of the environment. But whenever things get too bad people will always turn to someone else to fix the problem. Be it the president or other world leaders; people will turn over the problem to someone else so that they dont have to deal with it. In their minds they are thinking "Let them deal with the problem because when something goes wrong it will have been their fault." What people dont realize is that many of the things that go on can be avoidedif everyone did their part. It isnt difficult to do something to help the environment, but people refuse to do it anyway. Now when there are so many problems going on in the earth, people are turing to others and basically saying "fix it" when it could have been avoided in the first place. Everyday we see people protesting and asking for answers from one person. But many dont realize that though they expect them to; one person cant have to answer to all the worlds problems. For there to be a solution to all of the issues plaguing us, everyone has to join together because when you place the weight of the world on everyones shoulders instead of just one person, its a much lighter load.
