Being born and raised on the mean streets of NYC has taught me a lot on how to get free stuff in the city. In the past year me and my friends have started to go to free open bar events around manhatten and here is my review of the best and worst open bars in new York city (all of them can be found at http://nyc.myopenbar.com/)
Home sweet home on Tuesdays at 11- probably the best open bar in the city, if you don’t mind hipsters. These free vodka drinks are actually free (not the required dollar tip that most other places pretty much demand) and the bartenders are actually pretty upbeat and friendly even though theyre dealing with a large crowd. The DJ spins a lot of 90s throwback music if that’s your scene and there is a pretty decent dance floor. Just arrive early to get your drink on early. Bonus points for a really nice staff and clean bathrooms.
DARKROOM pretty much every day at different times (sometimes 1230-1 other days 2-230) This is my personal favorite because the crowd is not the usual open bar attendees (hipsters, college kids) but more diverse and maybe a bit older. The music however may not be to everyone’s liking and the “open bar” is actually 1 dollar vodka drinks with a lot of ice. Regardless they are pretty generous on the alcohol and you can grab plastic pint glasses to pour 2-3 drinks in to make drinking more convenient.
Happy endings Tuesdays at 11. Avoid going to if you’re looking to have a good stress free night. This open bar is crowded with pretentious trust fund kids and tacky girls and pseudo sexual predators. This bar in itself is pretty cool to go to on the weekends but at open bar there is no elbow room and the bartenders are rude and you have to fight to get their attention.
The skinny –different times usually on Tuesdays. Probably the best music and you can get unlimited drinks with a 1 dollar tip, however it usually doesn’t have enough people to be lively.
