Greek Chorus

In ancient greek theatre, for the most part there are no women. For the most part, men played women. This was part of the patriarchal society I'm sure, but I do know that the men and women in Ancient Greece had two separate festivals for theatre. The only women who were in attendance at the men's festivals in the audience were the men's courtesans. Women participated in their own festivals, but they left no record of what they did. It is possible they had their own festivals and participated in theatre outside of when the festivals came down to be perform in the center of the town. Men played women using different masks which sometimes represented actual humans, other times they were just imaginary people recreated through the masks.
