Patriarchal Society

We all know that in the times of ancient Greece the father was the dominant figure in the family. The Greeks were a patriarchal society, each being governed by the orders that the father put forth. We see evidence of a patriarchal society emerge in the story of Oedipus Rex. When Oedipus was born, it was the father who decided that Oedipus would be killed, from fear of the prophecy coming true. Although the mother didn't believe in what the prophet had said, and was reluctant to kill her own son, she had no say in the matter and had to do what was told.
As the years of the ancient Greeks faded behind us and people became more open minded we would assume that such views would change. We hoped, that all woman would have a greater say not only in their own home, but in society as well. However, if we take a closer look at society today, is it safe to say that anything has really changed? Are woman today being treated respectfully and being given the same opportunities as men?
Sadly, after all these years, after all the efforts that women put forth to change the world, we still live in a patriarchal society. Although some efforts have changed the world drastically, there are still things that must be altered in order to make it all things fair among the sexes. Women in the workplace are often judged right away simply by their sex. Businesses are more prone to hiring a male as opposed to a female, simply because they believe that a male is the dominant, stronger sex. Society must rid themselves of such stereotypes and judge people based on their abilities. We can only hope, that in the next 50 years or so society will realize such discriminations and change their way of thinking.
