Titanic (cont. 2)

Last but not least, Titanic has an incredible amount of spectacle. If you have not seen the movie you are definitely missing out. Why you ask? Well, half the ship rises out of the water and the ship splits in to two separate pieces. Honestly, if you guys haven’t seen the movie you have to check it out. Also, a large part of the spectacle is when the passengers aboard the ship board the lifeboats. It gives people a sense of the sheer horror of the situation. In my opinion, spectacle lets people live vicariously through the characters. It excites the viewer, but also comforts them because it is not happening to them.

All in all, I believe that Titanic is a true modern day tragedy. It encompasses all of the criteria outlined in Aristotle’s Poetics, which makes for an epic tragedy. There are many more movies that encompass all the criteria for a tragedy, but for some reason that I can’t quite put my finger on, this movie is in a league of its own. Maybe, it is because it’s based on true story, or maybe its because the director was brilliant. All I know is that it is an amazing tradegy.
