Visual sense is such a big part of modern society. You would not want to walk through Times Square without being able to see all the beautiful neon signs and flashy banners. Yet, when you come to think about it, that is what makes people really stupid and less genius. We spend so much of our lives watching television. Scientifically, our brain activity is 5 times faster when we are asleep than when we watch TV. Visual senses devastate human potentials and talents. Would Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder be the same with visual abilities?
Oedipus seems to illustrate this view really well at the end of the story. He stabs his eyes out and loses his visual sense. Yet, he would get an insight about something else. He would learn about his hamartia, the arrogance, and unavoidable fate. Could he have presented this better? Something that he could visualize, Jocasta’s beauty, ruined him, and let him walk into his tragedy. Now, he sees beyond what he could visualize physically.
