back to the future, family and masculinity

This movie came out in 1985. Back in the days in Regan era, masculinity is remarkable feature in movies. For this reason, even though this movie is considered as a sci-fi genre, it delivers messages regarding the role of men in family. The main character is accidentally sent to in the fifties and sees his teenage parents. The people in the fifties often say lines, such as “men should be strong” emphasizing the role of father. Furthermore, women in the movie are always depicted as feminine and weak. Those messages conveyed by the movie reflect people’s view of the ideological role of a father and a mother in the eighties.
